From time to
time I set up a
still-life to paint as a private and contemplative exercise. I'm attracted
by objects with history such as old china dishes and metal boxes - things
that have been used to hold or contain other elements, but that have their
own distinct character. I'm also fascinated by the problems posed by painting
reflective, glazed and decorated surfaces and contrasting them with other
textures and
with the underpinning of
geometrical structure.
Artists whose
paintings of understated still life that I revere include Jean Baptiste Chardin
and Giorgio Morandi.
